In Costa Rica, the majority of fishing charters that go FAD/Seamount fishing are located in Quepos and Los Suenos. They head from 65 up to 300 miles away towards the Coco Island seamount.
Costa Rica FAD and Seamount Fishing Trips Itineraries
FAD/Seamount fishing trips typically depart at 3 PM or later since the travel time to the FADs can take from 8 hours up to 12 hours. Dawn is around 5:30 AM an that’s when the action starts, the crew will do their job to find trophy fish. During the day you will have breakfast and lunch, once it is dark dinner is served, and most importantly fishing for hours. You will need to recover energy, get to sleep and repeat this routine for as many days as you want, truly a hardcore angler’s dream.
Costa Rica FAD and Seamount Fishing Seasons and Target Species
All species can be found year-round, however here are the peak months during the year:
- Black Marlin, November to April. Costa Rica’s seamounts and FADs attract black marlin, a large and powerful billfish species. Anglers come from around the world to try and land one of these impressive fish.
- Blue Marlin, November to April. Blue marlin, another iconic billfish species, are also common targets in Costa Rican FAD and seamount fishing. They are known for their incredible size and strength.
- Yellowfin Tuna, year-round. Yellowfin tuna are one of the most sought-after species in FAD and seamount fishing. They are known for their speed and strength, making them a challenging and prized catch.
- Sailfish, December to April. Pacific sailfish are abundant in Costa Rican waters, and they are frequently encountered when FAD and seamount fishing. They are known for their acrobatic displays when hooked.
- Dorado (Mahi-Mahi), May to September. Dorado, often referred to as mahi-mahi or dolphinfish, are vibrant and agile fish that are commonly found around FADs and seamounts. They are prized for their delicious white meat and beautiful colors.
- Bigeye Tuna, December to April. Bigeye tuna are another tuna species commonly targeted in seamount fishing. They are known for their large size and are highly valued in the market.
- Wahoo, November to April. Wahoo is a fast-swimming predator that can often be found near seamounts. They are known for their sharp teeth and delicious meat.
- Mako Sharks, year-round. Some anglers target mako sharks, particularly around seamounts, for the thrill of battling these powerful predators.
- Other Tuna Species: In addition to yellowfin and bigeye tuna, other tuna species like skipjack tuna and albacore tuna may also be encountered when FAD and seamount fishing.
- Various Billfish Species, November to April. In addition to black marlin, blue marlin, and sailfish, anglers may also encounter striped marlin and other billfish species while FAD and seamount fishing in Costa Rica.
